Interview: Ember Clothing

I'm currently gathering some brilliant brands together and reviewing them here at Men's Needs, today is the turn of Ember Clothing of Manchester. Hit the jump to see what Jack, Jackson and I have said about their brand.

(MN) Right guys, first of all can you just tell us a little bit about yourselves?

(Jackson) We are a small clothing brand based in west Manchester who takes pride in being a Mancunian brand and producing high quality urban/skate apparel.

(Jack)  We’ve been good mates since high school and Ember is a way of expanding into the professional world and still being able to go for a pint together at the weekend. We both obviously take a lot of pride in being from Manchester. To us, Manchester is home to the best sports teams, the best Music artists and certainly one of the best urban fashion scenes in the UK.

(MN) Can you explain to me where your name came from?

(Jackson) When the business was started, a good friend helped set it up. ‘Ember’ is an abbreviation of his surname, we chose it because it is easy to work with graphically, as well as representing the idea that every fire must start from an ember.

(MN) What was the first item you decided to create?

(Jackson) Our first item was our ‘Ember Lion Tee’. After searching through pages and pages of inspiration, I created a logo with a Rastafarian influence, and decided to get them printed. I was really surprised with the results and the response from people who saw them.

(MN) For anyone who isn’t familiar with the brand how would you describe it yourself?

(Jack) We’re a small clothing company started by 2 mates trying to do something unique in a collapsing economy. We’re proud to be Mancuniun and can’t emphasize enough how absolutely everything we do is inspired by our beautiful city. We sell Tees and Jumpers with unique designs that have more meaning than a lot of apparel you might find in a high street store.

(MN) Is there anything out there that inspires your collections, or any favorite brands/designers?

(Jackson) I personally like Manna's work, which is unusual as I tend to become bored by what I call ‘One Logo Wonders’ - brands which use a single image and use it on every piece of clothing. I believe Manna has came from the exact place we have, and it’s great to see that hard work can make something go a long way.

(MN) Yeah I'd certainly encourage people to have a gander at the Manna Big Cartel. I have to say I do like your Peacekeeper design, can you just explain how you got the idea for this?

(Jackson) The Peacekeeper design was our first purely graphical design. I saw people wearing tees adorned with Peace symbols and CND logos (The inversed peace symbol) and decided to my own take on it. Instead of using a random pattern for it, I aimed to give it more of a meaning. Many people claim they want peace, yet attempt to create it with violence and bullets.

(MN) Yeah it's come across beautifully and it's nice to know it has a good meaning behind it. I see you’ve just opened your first store over at Big Cartel, I bet that was a good feeling, what made you decide to expand and get your own online store?

(Jack) Opening our Big Cartel was, if anything, a relief. After so long of selling our merchandise through friends, college and facebook we finally have an online store that we can promote and will allow us to sell our clothes to the whole of Manchester and the UK.

(MN) It's nice to see you guys pushing outside of Manchester as well as trying to gain a foothold in the city. It's been great chatting with you guys I'd just like you to do a simple fill in the gaps question to finish off.

(Jack and Jackson) Ember Clothing is best described as Mancunian with maybe a little bit of Gravy and Lager thrown in for good measure.

As I said in the interview, it was a pleasure chatting with the lads over at Ember clothing, if I was you I'd get straight over to their Big Cartel shop and hit some of their lines, and keep an eye out for some new lines dropping pretty soon which are in collaboration with a local tattoo artist (sounds good). And for sure get over to their Twitter and Facebook and follow/like them.
