How can you make the Ultraboost better? Appeal to a wider audience, already pleasing the masses, Adidas have partnered with Parley for the Oceans, a movement which is striving for cleaner oceans, by taking solid pollutants from the ocean, and giving them a second life, on our feet, in the form of the greatest running shoe ever produced.
I am a big fan of collaborations done right, and cleaning up our oceans is something I'm all for, something we sometimes forget about.
Reading up on this collaboration, sites have stated that Adidas and Parley have used solid pollutants salvaged from our seas, but not what they actually are. When thinking of seas pollutants, you probably think of Oils and maybe nuclear waste. But pollutants are basically anything harmful to our environment, giving an undesired effect. Which looking at the Ultraboost, seems to be plastic waste. And we have all seen, mostly on TV, the effects non natural products can have in our seas, such as Dolphins getting caught in Tuna nets, which, to my knowledge are mostly plastics.
This makes this collaboration quite unique, and different from Concepts or Ronnie Fieg slapping a unwanted theme on their inferior collabs. Where as Parley have a genuine, real life story, as Parley have created, a world first with a shoe upper made entirely of yarns and filaments reclaimed and recycled from ocean waste, including illegal deep-sea gill nets. Parley partner organization Sea Shepherd retrieved the nets after a 110-day expedition tracking an illegal poaching vessel, which culminated off the coast of West Africa. Thus, really doing their bit for the environment, and also giving us a real reason to purchase their shoes.
Although I haven't seen any numbers for this release, I think it would be amazing to carry on this work, giving waste an additional use, really making our shoes sustainable, as that would also help our environment. And we could feel good, doing our bit, but still wearing what we love.
The shoes release on the 29th of July, through Adidas.com , with no retail price set, expect to pay around the £100-120 mark for this excellent piece of history.
